Top tips for a great website

As you may be aware, a good website is a key step in attracting clients and persuading them that your business will be a good fit. Staggeringly, studies show that it takes 0.05 seconds for users to form opinions about a website which will determine whether they like your site or not and, often, whether they will stay or leave. Given that the stakes are so high – and decided so quickly – having a good website is crucial. In order to make your website as good as it can be, here are our top tips for you to consider.

  1. Well designed, fresh content

Your website should encapsulate the ethos of your company, while clearly showing your products and/or services. In practice, this means that your website should be visually appealing whilst remaining professional – ideally taking into account the types of clients you aim to attract to your page. For example, if you’d like to highlight the high quality of your bespoke furniture, your website should try and highlight your talent at design whilst also foregrounding your products reliability. Often, a website may be the first impression of your business and products, so making sure that this impression is of a high quality, well-thought out, and constantly renewed or updated website is crucial.

  1. Functional

Similar to the above point, the functionality of your website is a key factor in making sure that clients gain a good impression of your business. The site as a whole should work efficiently, without errors or lags, and should have proof-read and engaging copy. Broken links, laggy pages, or mis-typed text can result in visitors leaving your website for a more efficient alternative, so making sure that your website is functional is just as important as its aesthetic.

  1. Optimised for mobile

Given that well over half of website traffic is from mobile phone users, it’s important that your website is optimised for mobile phone use. Whether or not your visitors use mobile or computers, your website needs to be functional and appealing, so using mobile-first design (see our blog post on which discusses mobile first design here) is really important and contributes to your sites SEO ranking.

  1. Contact information

Make it easy for potential clients to contact you! If you’re hesitant about making company email addresses available, then you can always have an enquiries form (like ours here) that will take all enquiries to a centralised address without having to give out company emails.

  1. Optimised for search and social media

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the way in which you get more traffic to your website through organic searches in engines like Google. In other words, ticking SEO boxes allows your website to ‘talk’ to the search engine algorithm, which will then place you higher up the search engine results page. A higher SEO ranking, then, means increased visibility for your page, all without paying for website promotion.
