Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) is a technology that provides slower broadband speeds compared to FTTP.
FTTC is slower than FTTP as the fibre cables from the local exchange (or data centre) stop at the street cabinet. From here, traditional copper cabling is used to pipe the data to your router.
You've probably noticed the installation of new local cabinets, and the laying of cabling to them, over the past years. These cabinets route data to your home, for voice and internet, via existing copper telephone wires.
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) is a broadband technology which can provide very fast internet speeds.
Fibre to the Premises means that the fibre broadband internet connection from the local exchange is connected to the router in your home. This making it much faster than the old copper telephone line used by many other broadband services.
With FTTP, you can access lightning-fast internet speeds of up to 1Gbps or even higher. It's also worth noting that FTTP can also accommodate lower speeds, which is great if you're on a tight budget or don't need fast connectivity right away but may require it in the future.

Mobile broadband — 4G or 5G — wins in three scenarios. The first is rural premises where fibre is not available and the alternative is slow ADSL. The second is temporary sites such as events, building sites and pop-up retail where there is no time to install a fixed line. The third is as a back-up connection for a site that needs internet to keep operating, so traffic automatically fails over to mobile if the fixed line goes down. For a typical office with FTTP available, fixed-line is usually the better primary.
FTTC stands for Fibre To The Cabinet — fibre runs from the exchange to the green street cabinet near you, and the final stretch into your building is copper. Speeds are typically up to 80 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. FTTP is Fibre To The Premises — fibre runs the whole way to your building, with speeds from 100 Mbps up to multi-gigabit. FTTP is more reliable, more symmetrical, and is the long-term direction of UK telecoms. We check which is available at your address before recommending.
There are usually three. The first is checking whether a Gigabit Voucher or community-fibre scheme has reached your area — these are sometimes available where the commercial rollout has not. The second is bonded broadband, where two or more slower lines are combined into one usable connection. The third is fixed wireless or 4G/5G with an external aerial, which works well even in fringe-signal locations. We can survey the location and tell you which mix is realistic before any contracts are signed.
Modern 4G and 5G connections can comfortably serve a small office of ten to twenty users for general productivity, email, browsing and video calls. We deploy with a proper business-grade router rather than a consumer hotspot, with external aerials where needed to lock onto the strongest signal. For heavier workloads — large file transfers, broadcast streaming, busy retail point-of-sale — we recommend bonding mobile with another connection for resilience.
Mobile broadband is the fastest connectivity option to deploy. We can typically have a working business-grade 4G or 5G router on-site within two to five working days, sometimes faster. Fixed-line installations vary — FTTC tends to be ten to twenty working days, FTTP can be six to twelve weeks depending on whether the address already has fibre. If you need connectivity immediately, mobile is usually the bridge while a permanent fixed line is provisioned.
On a properly designed setup, the router holds a primary line and a back-up line, and switches automatically within seconds. Your team usually does not notice anything other than a brief pause. We log every failover so you can see how often it happens and whether the primary is degrading over time. For sites where internet is business-critical, we recommend two physically diverse connections — for example, fibre as primary and 4G/5G as back-up — rather than two lines on the same network.
