The historic Drum Estate, with its grand house, is a small, privately owned farm in the south-east of Edinburgh. As well as a regenerative farm and wildlife conservation areas, the family manages a high level of public access, a number of thriving businesses, charities and residential and holiday let properties based around the beautiful 18th century estate.
Objectives
Drum Estate required reliable, integrated systems that could support security, connectivity and day-to-day operations without compromising accessibility or visitor experience.
The initial driver was an immediate insurance requirement to upgrade fire and intruder systems. From there, Drum Estate wanted to work with a single, trusted partner who could improve visibility across the estate and deliver systems that worked together rather than in isolation.

orona IT Solutions was first engaged to address urgent fire and intruder alarm requirements to meet insurer expectations. This provided a foundation of trust and demonstrated the value of a structured, compliant approach.
From that starting point, the Estate’s technology and security infrastructure was developed in clearly defined phases, each building on the last:
- Installation of electric gates to improve access control across the estate
- Deployment of CCTV across multiple properties using an NX Witness multi-server architecture
- Design and implementation of estate-wide Wi-Fi and network infrastructure
- Fibre connectivity linking multiple properties onto a single internal network
- Ongoing improvements to network resilience and performance
- Design and delivery of the Drum Estate website to support the estate’s public-facing presence
This phased approach ensured minimal disruption while steadily improving capability, control and integration across the estate.
